Ocean Point Column
October 6,2016
By Maryellen Bertrand
I begin this week’s column with very sad news; on October 1
the McGonegal Family lost their son Michael. Michael was a life long summer
resident here at the Point and enjoyed his vacations with his mom, dad and 3
brothers. I recall Michael as a youngster swimming at the beach, playing at the
Casino and being so kind to all his friends. Michael had a great smile,
wonderful sense of humor and a passion for good music. The Ocean Point
community will surely miss him. We extend our sincerest condolences to Mike’s
mom and dad Tish and Tom; to his 3 brothers and sisters in law Tom and Alexa,
Kevin and Dani and Joe and Emily Walsh and his nephews John, Brendan and Ryan and
his nieces Ellie and Miriam. The family is in our thoughts and prayers at this
very difficult time.
Another long
time resident of Ocean Point, Jean Merton passed away on September 25. Jean
summered at the Point along with her late husband Joe and their children Joseph
and Charlotte. Jean enjoyed sitting on the porch with Joe enjoying the ocean,
sunsets and the beautiful surroundings of the Point. Jean had a winning smile
and was beloved by all who knew her. The Ocean Point Community extends our
condolences to her son Joseph (Jody) and his wife Jennifer and to Jean’s daughter
Charlotte and her husband Jack Logan as well as her 4 grandchildren and 3 great
grandchildren.
The Martin/Ross Family reunion was held recently at the Ross
cottage hosted by Gail, Chris and Marilyn Ross. On September 10 many family
members gathered for the festivities and included: Pam and Doug Allen of
Yarmouth, Maine, Phil and Kathy Martin of Falmouth, Maine, Tim and Peggy Martin
of Queche, Vermont along with their daughter Hannah who travelled from
Massachusetts and their son Chris and friend Kristen from Oregon, Burleigh and
Donna Martin and their son Jonathan and grandson Ian of Augusta. They had a
wonderful day catching up and look forward to next year’s get together.
Following the reunion Marilyn Ross’s sister Cecelia and
Cecilia’s sister in law Lynn Mande arrived from Michigan for a 2 week visit
enjoying the weather and the many interesting sites that the Boothbay Region
has to offer.
The annual Fall Foliage Fair at the Railway will be held on
Saturday and Sunday October 8-9. Many vendors will be on hand to display and
sell their goods along with music and food. The fair is a great place to meet
up with summer friends one last time and do some holiday shopping.
Pumpkin People are beginning to appear in East Boothbay. As
in the past there are so many wonderful creative displays and such a festive
way to celebrate the season.
Dick Alden is a featured sculptor at the Viles Arboretum in
Augusta beginning September 30. Dick will demonstrate his expertise in the art
of sculpting, along with other sculptors, by creating a new piece of work;
their work will be displayed at a reception on Saturday Oct.8. Children are
invited to visit the exhibit and learn the art of sculpting with some hands-on
experience.
Have a great week!
