Michael Philip McGonegal

I have posted lots of obituaries of Ocean Pointers on this blog, but none was even close to being so difficult to post as this one. Tish and I are very sad to have lost our Mike.

A true Ocean Pointer, Mike was raised as an Ocean Point Kid from infancy on. He LOVED OP. Many of you saw him recently at our 50th wedding anniversary party on our lawn. He always managed to be there on special occasions.

When we moved away from Burlington in 2010, Mike stayed behind. Burlington became HIS city, and he truly loved it there. Mike always lived a short walk away from his work places, the restaurants of downtown Burlington. Friends referred to him as the Mayor!

You will see Mike in the Burlington Marketplace Mural. He is top center in a white shirt and tie. This picture shows a small part of the mural. If Bernie Sanders were asked, he'd probably say the mural is "huuuuge"! Be sure to look for Mike if you ever get to Burlington.

Mike's Obituary from the Boothbay Register:

Michael Philip McGonegal, of Burlington, Vermont, born Jan. 24, 1969, died on Oct. 1, 2016.

He is survived by his parents, Thomas and Patricia McGonegal of Acton, Massachusetts, and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Alexa McGonegal, Kevin and Danielle McGonegal, and Joseph McGonegal and Emily Walsh, along with five loving nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Those who loved Mike knew him for his sense of humor, his large circle of good friends in the Burlington late-night crowd, his love of live music, and his enjoyment of vacations at Ocean Point, Maine.

Mike attended elementary and middle school in Underhill, Vermont, Rice Memorial High School in South Burlington, and the University of Vermont. A great writer, great wit, and stickler for grammar, Mike entertained and instructed, and he took great pride in his New Yorker cartoon fame, his pranks on family and friends, and in being caricatured on the Church Street mural in Burlington.

A funeral Mass will take place at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Acton, Massachusetts, on Saturday, 10/8, at 11 AM.
