Frederick
J. McIntyre, 79, a gentle giant loved by many, died peacefully on
October 27, 2013 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.
He was born in Boston to William J. and Veronica M. McIntyre on October 5, 1934. Fred grew up in Enfield and graduated from Howland High in Lincoln. He then served in the U.S. Air Force, the European sector. After an honorable discharge, he attended Atlantic Union College in South Lancaster, Mass. where he studied to be a Bible history teacher.
A career in construction plumbing came next, then a plumbing and heating supervisor for a 300-bed hospital for 10 years. Upon moving to Maine, Fred became the water superintendent for the East Boothbay Water District, where his greatest joy was winning the best tasting water in Maine two years in a row.
After a severe brain injury, Fred turned to pottery and was able to convey the beauty he saw all around him with the special designs he created on his hand-carved vases, some of which were chosen to be displayed at the Art Gallery at the University of New England Westbrook campus.
Fred was a special volunteer at the Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts in Newcastle, where he helped construct kilns. One of the kilns is named “Salubrious Brother” a favorite word of Fred's. Who can ever forget Fred’s reminder to people to “stay vertical.” We will all miss his winning ways. He was so loved by so many.
He is survived by his wife, Corinne; stepson, Jeffrey Pascoe; grandchildren, Alisia and Danny Pascoe of Burlington, Vt.; stepson, Bradley Pascoe and his wife Courtney, and granddaughter Ariel Pascoe of Georgia, Vt.; daughter, Darlene McIntyre van Appelen and her husband, Nathan van Appelen, and grandchildren Johnathan, Heidi and Kendrick van Appelen of Nanaimo, British Columbia; daughter, Sharon Moore and her husband Jeff Moore, and grandchildren Olivia Moore and Dylan Miller of Calgary, Canada.
There will be a memorial service for Fred on June 7, 2014 at the Wilson Chapel at Ocean Point.
Any memorial donations may be made to the Bay View Lodge #196, 118 Ocean Point Road, East Boothbay, ME.
