Ocean Point Column
July 25,2019
By Maryellen Bertrand
I begin this week’s column with some very sad news; our dear
friend and neighbor and one of Ocean Point’s most beloved residents Scoop
Marden passed away suddenly on July 17. Like many of you I have so many
wonderful memories of Scoop beginning at a very early age.
Scoop was a devoted wife to Bob and lovingly cared for him
for many years.
I believe when her husband Bob passed I recall writing that
if you were lucky enough to know Bob then you were undoubtedly extremely
blessed.
I feel this way about Scoop and her amazing family as well. Family
was everything to Scoop and she thoroughly enjoyed being with her children,
grandchildren and great grandchildren whatever the occasion.
She was the
best of neighbors and we shared many wonderful experiences together; we walked
many a morning after she devotedly raised the flags on the front lawn when Bob
was no longer able, played many rounds of golf and sat numerous evenings on her
porch sipping wine, enjoying the sunset and discussing everything from the news
of the day, a good book, to sharing recipes or talking about a sporting event.
Scoop was well versed in any topic you wanted to discuss and she cheerfully
greeted every passerby with her warm friendly demeanor and winning smile.
Scoop was incredibly talented in so many areas from flower
arranging and gardening, cooking, painting, knitting, and furniture refinishing
as well as designing her own holiday cards; I always waited with anticipation
to see what new and creative design Scoop would craft and they were always beautifully detailed.
For as long as I can recall Scoop was very involved in the
Wilson Chapel, opening the doors each morning for visitors to come in and
admire our beautiful Chapel, watering the flowers and often arranging flowers
for Sunday Services.
She was also instrumental in volunteering not only in our OP
community but in her hometown of Waterville as well. If you needed a hand with
any task, Scoop was always available.
Scoop has made a lasting impression on so many of us and I
know with certainty that we will always cherish those happy memories of her;
all will surely miss her.
Our condolences to her children: sons Bob and his wife
Lydia, Eric and his wife Jen and daughters Sharon and husband Bob Johnson and
Holly and her husband Jose Cruz also grandchildren Brad and wife Katie, Sadie,
Hannah and partner Rob, Anna Marie and husband Rick, Lindsay and husband Brady,
Iliana and partner Gabe and great grandchildren Maddox, Renn, Molly, Caleb and
Adelle Marie, brothers in law Donald and Hal and step mother Cathy Marshall.
A memorial service for Scoop will be held on Friday July 26
at the United Methodist Church, 61 Pleasant Street, Waterville at 3 P.M. and a
celebration of her life will take place in front of her home on Shore Rd. Ocean
Point at 7 P.M. Thursday evening July 27. In lieu of flowers contributions may
be made in Scoop’s memory to the charity of your choice.
If you happened to be on vacation this week you certainly
experienced some of the best weather of the summer.
