Ocean Point Column
November 9,2017
By Maryellen Bertrand
Sadly, Ocean Point has lost another beloved resident; Bob
Marden passed away October 29 at his home in Waterville with all of his family
by his side. Bob was a dear and cherished friend and neighbor to all in the
Ocean Point Community.
Throughout his
life Bob’s experiences and interests were wide and varied and included law and
politics. In his early life he was an Eagle Scout and a Naval Veteran. Bob
served on many Boards and Charitable organizations throughout his career. He loved reading, music and sports.
Bob was an avid
skier and golfer and loved a competitive game of tennis. If you happened by the
tennis courts early on a Sunday morning you would witness a hard fought (and
often boisterous and entertaining) doubles match with friends. He also loved
being on the water in his boat the Recess enjoying beautiful summer days.
Bob’s love for music was witnessed by all of Ocean Point
each 4th of July as he led our Horribles Parade with his band. He
later took on the role of “chauffeuring” our parade Grand Marshall in one of
his many convertibles. I do believe the 4th of July celebration was
one of his favorite events of the summer.
Bob’s musical talent was not limited to the Horribles Parade;
Bob was a member of a well-known group of jazz musicians known as the Elders.
Each summer they would perform a Dixieland Jazz concert at the Casino that
would bring the house down! I’m sure if you attended you would agree that his
concert was without a doubt one of the highlights of the summer.
Many a summer evening, sunset enthusiasts would gather on
the rocks while Bob delighted the crowd with a cannon salute and lowering of
his flag assisted, of course, by Scoop.
Bob was a very important part of the Ocean Point Community
serving as Secretary to the Colony Trust for many years for which we are all so
appreciative; he helped shape this special community into what it is today. If
you were fortunate enough to have known Bob Marden than you were truly very lucky.
Our community will be at a loss without Bob’s many and
varied talents, his quick wit, his enormous sense of humor, his love of family,
friends, community and of course, Ocean Point. Our condolences to his wife Scoop,
his daughter Sharon and husband Bob Johnson, his son Bob Jr. and wife Lydia,
his daughter Holly and husband Pace, his son Eric and wife Jenny, his
grandchildren: Hannah, Brad, Sadie, Ileana, Anna, Lindsay and Zachary, and 3
great grandchildren Maddox, Renn and Molly on the loss of their beloved
husband, father, father- in- law and grandfather and to Bob’s surviving
siblings, brothers Harry and Don and sister Roberta Alden along with many
nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be held on Friday November 24 at the
Colby College Millet Alumni House at 11:00 a.m. A gathering is also being
planned next summer at Ocean Point.
Last week’s storm knocked out power not only at Ocean Point but
also all around the Region for nearly a week. There are several pictures on
line of the many downed trees and limbs around the Point, hopefully no one
sustained damage.
Coco Webber took advantage of the outage and drove to
Massachusetts to visit with Chris, Hannah and grandson Chip while awaiting
power to be restored.
Veterans Day is being celebrated this year on Saturday November 11 th and is a time to not only be thankful for the freedoms we enjoy
but also to say thanks to those who serve our country and put themselves in
harms way each and every day. Please take this opportunity to reach out to a
Veteran and offer your thanks and support.
Have a great week!
