Dear
Friends:
This coming summer marks the 100th
anniversary of the Wilson Memorial Chapel.
According to Chapel records, the first service was held in August 1917,
after Reverend Wilson had completed construction of the Chapel in memory of his
wife, Janet Wilson.
We
have some special activities planned for this coming summer, to commemorate the
100th anniversary, and we hope that you will be able to join us. In
addition to this letter, details will be published in the Boothbay Register and on our website – more about
that below – by early summer.
The
weekend of July 15-16, we will celebrate the 95th occasion of a
visit to Ocean Point and the Chapel, from the Maine Seacoast Mission. The Sunbeam
will be brought down to the Boothbay Harbor area (built at Washburn &
Doughty in 1995, the Sunbeam will be
returning home!). Residents and visitors
will be able to tour the boat and learn first-hand about the Sunbeam’s mission and capabilities, and
how the boat and her crew provide support to residents of many Maine islands,
as well as many people living on the mainland.
Tours will be on Sunday, the 16th, from 11:00 – 1:00 via boat
shuttles from the Card Cove dock. The
Maine Seacoast Mission will also have its own event on July 15.
On
Sunday, August 6, we will have a commemorative service at 1:30 p.m., followed
by a reception starting at 2:30 and open to all Ocean Pointers and friends, and
their guests. The service will provide a
brief retrospective of the Chapel over the last 100 years, and honor the many
who have served faithfully in the Chapel’s mission. The reception will be a wonderful
celebration, with food and drink, for all comers.
Regular
Sunday services at 9:30 a.m. will start on June 25 and continue to September
3. Whether at one, or both, of the
special events, or on any summer Sunday, we hope that you will join us as we
celebrate 100 years of the Chapel’s ministry and history, and look forward to
the next 100 years.
Our
new website will be live shortly; please visit www.WilsonMemorialChapel.org. Details of the 100th anniversary
celebration will be shared and available on the website. And the Chapel will be included in the
Boothbay Region Garden Club Home and Garden Tour on July 21.
We
cannot send this letter out without mentioning some very sad news. As many of you may have heard, Danny Beal,
the Chapel’s long-time organist and a well-known, universally-liked musician,
died in January. Danny brought lots of
joy, laughter and music wherever he went.
We will miss him.
We
hope to see you this summer.
Sincerely,
Stan
Martin, President
