Ocean Point Column
January 14,2016
By Maryellen Bertrand
It was wishful thinking on my part to believe that we would
continue with the balmy weather that we have been experiencing in December and
early January. Temperatures have certainly plummeted this past week here in the
northeast as seen in the incredible “sea smoke” photo by Julie Brown where the
temperature was just 6 degrees.
Sue Goodrich has posted surf photos on the blog as she reminds us not to
forget our gloves when out walking and enjoying the surf, a sure sign that it
is quite chilly.
New Year’s Eve found Jean and John Webster hosting a family
gathering with John’s siblings and their spouses that included attending the
Portland Pirates hockey game and dinner and a New Year’s Day breakfast of Maine
blueberry pancakes.
Long time Ocean Point resident Neil Schroeder died peacefully
January 5 at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a very brief illness. Neil
loved spending time with his family at their cottage and Neil was an avid fan of
the Sunday softball games. He could be seen each week sitting in his chair
enjoying the game and socializing with the players and spectators. Neil loved
the theatre and performed in many productions over the years, our condolences
to his former wife and friend Sylvia and to this sons Rolfe and Ken and
daughter Melissa Bliss, her husband Henry and to Neil’s grandchildren Sam and
Owen. A celebration of Neil’s life was held in South Portland on January 10; contributions
may be made in Neil’s memory to the Ocean Point Colony Trust or the Coastal
Maine Botanical Gardens.
Just a reminder to send any news that you may have for next
week’s column. I’m sure that many of you will be watching the NFL playoffs this
upcoming weekend and supporting your team. Most of us here in New England will
be cheering for Tom Brady and the Patriots as they hope to repeat their Superbowl
victory, go Pats!!!!
Have a great week!
