Ocean Point Column
July 10
By Maryellen Bertrand
Ocean Point was quite a bustling
place over the holiday weekend. It was wonderful to see so many families
gathered to celebrate.
Who would have thought that we would be experiencing a
hurricane on our opening weekend? I hope this is not an indication of the
summer weather ahead. Despite the weather we were able to get all of the 4th
of July activities in.
The Horribles Parade was once again a success and well
attended. Our Grand Marshall was Jim Brown on the occasion of his 90th
birthday. Thank you to Jim for agreeing to be our Grand Marshall and special
thanks to Pete Hamblett for stepping in to drive Jim. A huge thanks to our band
for providing the music and of course thanks to all the participants this year.
Results of our first softball game of the season found the Yerrall team
defeating the Bertrand team 7-6.and was a hard-fought win to the end.
Outstanding players included Jeff, Bob, Roger, and Michael Slayton who coincidentally all played for the Yerrall team. Outstanding effort on the
Bertrand team included Joe and Dan Shea.
Happy Birthday to Jim Anagnost and to Michael Slayton; both
celebrated milestone birthdays this past week.
The Ocean Point Inn has opened their new Starfish Coffee
House featuring hot, iced and frozen beverages along with their breakfast
buffet. They have many flavored hot chocolates, lattés and steamers. They also
have Chai tea and Italian sodas and smoothies. What a great way to start your
morning while enjoying the beautiful view.
There is more sad news to report regarding Alice Hartwell’s
family. You will recall that her cousin Lisa Perry died recently. Sadly Lisa’s
brother, Craig Alan Carey has also died. Craig was the great grandson of
Auguste and Louisa Bocquel, and the grandson of Margarite Carlo, great nephew
of Alice B. Hartwell and cousin to Alice L. Hartwell. His father Durwood “Moe”
Carey, his niece Alexandra Perry and his cousin Alice L Hartwell survive him. A
celebration of both Craig and his sister Lisa will be held later this summer.
We certainly send our heartfelt condolences to the family.
The Pancake Breakfast will be held on Saturday July 12th
from 8:30 to 10 A.M.
The Rev. Edward J Wynne Jr. will conduct the service at the
chapel on Sunday July 13th. Rev Wynne is a retired Methodist
minister and resides in Damariscotta.Rev.
Wynne chairs the Pastoral Care Committee on the Miles Campus of Lincoln Health,
serves on the board of Coastal Senior College, and enjoys singing with the
Coastal Chorale. He holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern
University, an MDiv from Drew Theological School, and a PhD from New York
University.
Regular
weekly activities will continue the week of July 14th and there will
be a tennis scramble held on the 17th at 4:30. Please don’t forget
the Food Sale on Friday July 18th 9:30-11:00 A.M. The OP Memorial
tournament is scheduled for Saturday the 19th at 8:00 A.M. This is a
coed tournament and you do not have to be a member of the country club to play.
The entry fee is $25,00, which includes lunch and prizes. Players must be at
the golf course by 7:45. The sign up sheet is on the bulletin board at the
Casino. There will be more information forthcoming. Later that evening at 5:30
there is a Porch Party, BYO and an appetizer to share.
Have
a great week!
