OP column Nov.14

Ocean Point Column November 14
By Maryellen Bertrand

It’s always great to begin a column with exciting news and this week I have several newsworthy items. The first is that our extremely talented resident artist Donald Demers will be featured at the Vose Galleries in Boston beginning November 16 to December 28.The gallery has printed this information for all those interested.

Don Demers: Wandering the Coast, November 16 - December 28, 2013
“We are pleased to present twenty-five new works by one of America's top tier seascape and marine artists, Don Demers. "Wandering the Coast" will underscore the artist's mastery of portraying the pattern of sunlight and shadow on his subject matter, invoking, besides the visual, the other senses of sound, scent and even touch.
Demers' work has a timeless quality, reminiscent of the great marine painters of the 19th century - Lane, Bricher, Richards - and his warm chiaroscuro calls to mind the early American Impressionists. Although many artists paint the sea, only the elite few have gone to such lengths as Demers to establish an almost instinctual sense of his subject.”

Those familiar with Donald’s work know first hand how incredible his paintings are. This is definitely worth a trip to Boston!

From Meme Slayton comes great news regarding her daughter-in-law, Barbara. Barbara currently serves as Vice President of Government Relations for Lockheed Martin and is one of only 6 people selected from the company to travel to the South Pole and assist 40 scientists currently working there. The National Science Foundation awarded Lockheed Martin the contract for the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) This program allows scientific research to be conducted in the region. Her group is responsible for helping these scientists with all levels of their living conditions while doing their research, Congratulations to Barbara on being selected to assist in such a challenging and important mission. Not many of us will ever be able to say that we visited and worked in the coldest place on the planet! Everyone who knows Barbara is not surprised by her company’s choice, we are all looking forward to hearing of her incredible experiences. Stay warm!
Meme also reports that Jeff and Barb’s daughter Melanie is doing quite well at James Madison University and son Michael is currently looking at colleges.

In other exciting news Dana (Turpie) Wilson will soon be employed at Bigelow Labs in East Boothbay. Dana is currently employed at the Island Institute in Rockland and will begin her new position with Bigelow in early December as Donor Relations and Campaign Manager.
