OP Column July 14, 2016

Ocean Point Column
July 14,2016
By Maryellen Bertrand

The 4th of July weekend was extremely busy at the Point with family gatherings and holiday festivities. We had one of the best parades ever on Saturday beginning at Grimes Cove with many participants, great costumes and floats. Pat Waldman was our Grand Marshall this year and was driven by Nat Wilson in one of his antique cars, thank you to both of them for their participation.

The band, of course, always adds a great deal of merriment to the parade so thank you to all it’s members; just a reminder to everyone that the band is always seeking new members.

Jean Slayton’s family honored her on her 90th birthday by recreating a British theme; “Queen Jean” was dressed in the fashion of the Queen of England who also celebrated her 90th birthday recently. Jean was led by her “Royal Guard”, her sons and grandsons and her “Court”, her daughter in laws, their children and grandchildren.

The first softball game of the season was played after the parade and Team Bertrand defeated Team Yerrall 8-1.Beckett Slayton and Dan Shea both made outstanding plays for the winning team. The Sunday game found Team Bertrand once again victorious defeating Team Yerrall 3-2.

Our annual Chicken Barbeque was well attended, thanks to JD Hankinson and his crew as well as the kitchen crew for providing us with a great meal as part of our 4th of July celebration.

Activities continued the week after the 4th of July as Donna Logan chaired a very successful food Sale and the Newell Family chaired the ever-popular Pancake Breakfast which drew a huge crowd.

Thanks to the efforts of Ginny Kern we danced up a storm at the dance party on Saturday the 9th and the Yerrall Family treated us to some delicious ice cream sundaes at the Ice Cream Social Sunday evening. We all send our thanks to all of these individuals and their volunteers for providing a great first week of the season.

Activities for the week of July 11-16 include the Memorial Golf Tournament chaired by Link Brown. Link would like you all to know that the sign up sheet is currently at the Casino, sign up as a team or individually and you will be placed on a team. Please be at the golf course no later than 7:45 for an 8:00 start, this tournament is a coed 18-hole scramble and the entry fee is $25.00 that includes prizes and lunch.
The Browns, Danas and Whitehoused will host the first of 2 Porch Parties Saturday evening beginning at 5:30,BYO and an appetizer to share.

Rev. Edward J. Wynne, Jr. (Ret.) United Methodist Minister, Damariscotta, Maine will conduct Sunday services at the Chapel on July 17th at 9:30.

There has been a change in the date of our Attic Treasure Sale. The sale is chaired by Barbara Newell and assisted by Holly Hornor and will take place on Thursday July 21 from 9:00 until Noon. Set up will take place on Wednesday July 20 and volunteers are needed for both days. You may store small-donated items in the AD shed. Contact Barbara or Holly for more details.

Thanks to all the volunteers who put a much needed coat of paint on the Casino deck and ramp.

There will be a gathering in memory of Neil Schroeder who passed away in January. The family would like you to join them on Saturday July 16 at 3:30 at their home to dedicate a garden in his memory and to share remembrances of Neil.

Rob Morse was here visiting the Point with 2 college friends, Jackson Long of Dallas and Dan Hoffman of New York City.  Rob is Dianne Eakin’s nephew and summered at Ocean Point for many years with his mom and dad Denny and Ellie Morse. He was happy to return to Ocean Point and share some of the enjoyable activities of the area with his friends. Rob is currently working for the Yankees organization in media and communications which he joyfully describes as his “ dream job”.

Leroy Blackman of Leroy’s seafood will be selling fresh lobster and crabmeat in front of the Inn every Friday morning at 9:00.

I’d like to end the column by mentioning 2 longtime Ocean Point couples that probably will not be here this summer, Barbara and Gus Newell and Kitty and Jim Anagnost. We miss you and we are all thinking of you.

Have a great week!
